#WeeklyRoundup: Community Wi-Fi Launch at Mullet Hall, Portland Western

Last Friday, November 15, 2024, the Universal Service Fund (USF) had the distinct pleasure of launching a new Community Wi-Fi site in Mullet Hall, Portland Western, the constituency of The Hon. Daryl Vaz. Despite the rain making its presence known, the event was a resounding success, demonstrating the unwavering spirit and enthusiasm of the local community.

Even though the weather tried its best to dampen spirits, it couldn’t stop the excitement of residents who gathered in large numbers, eager to experience the new internet connectivity being introduced to their area. The launch of this Wi-Fi site is not just about access to the internet; it’s about connecting people to opportunities, information, and a more inclusive digital future.

This new hotspot is a part of the USF’s ongoing commitment to bridging the digital divide across Jamaica. By increasing access to reliable and affordable internet in underserved areas, we are empowering individuals and fostering a sense of community engagement and development. Mullet Hall now joins the growing list of communities benefiting from this initiative, and we are excited to see what more is to come.

The USF continues to drive positive change, one hotspot at a time. The successful launch of this Wi-Fi site is just the beginning, and we look forward to expanding our efforts to ensure that no community is left behind in Jamaica’s digital transformation.

#Weekly Roundup: USF Launches Youth and Technology Month Initiatives

In celebration of Youth and Technology Month this November, the Universal Service Fund (USF) is hosting two exciting competitions to engage and empower young Jamaicans: Crack the Code and the USF ICT Club Logo Competition.

  • Crack the Code (Nov 5–29, 2024) is a four-week coding challenge for Jamaicans aged 12–21, focused on troubleshooting and correcting HTML and CSS code. Participants will work through coding tasks and create a fully functional webpage, with top performers winning prizes like laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Basic coding knowledge is required to enter.
  • The ICT Club Logo Competition invites schools with active ICT clubs to design a logo representing the mission of the USF’s ICT Club. Winners will receive cash prizes: $250,000 for 1st place, $150,000 for 2nd, and $100,000 for 3rd.

Both initiatives are designed to enhance digital literacy, foster creativity, and help Jamaica move closer to its goal of becoming a knowledge-based society. For more details and to register, visit USF’s social media (@usfjamaica).

Ms. Nepatra Bennett, Corporate Planner at USF, emphasized that these competitions align with the fund’s mission to equip youth with the skills to thrive in the global digital economy. Through these programs, the USF aims to inspire innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving among the next generation of digital leaders.

#WeeklyRound-Up: Connecting communities: USF unveils new Community Wi-Fi hotspots

Last week was nothing short of exhilarating for the Universal Service Fund (USF) as we celebrated the launch of two Community Wi-Fi sites. The chosen hotspots Top Burger in Kingston Western and Lincoln Square in Manchester North Western are set to transform the way residents connect to the digital world.

Even with the rain attempting to make its presence felt, the launches unfolded seamlessly, showcasing the resilience and enthusiasm of the community. Local residents turned out in their numbers, eager to experience the new connectivity options, and their excitement was palpable. These new sites are more than just Wi-Fi spots; they symbolize a leap towards greater accessibility and digital inclusion for everyone.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in bridging the digital divide, and the positive reception from the community promises a bright future for even more connectivity projects. With the success of these launches, the USF is not just providing internet access; they’re fostering community engagement and empowerment. The future looks promising, and the digital landscape is expanding one hotspot at a time.
